Confusion over luggage changes
The one-bag rule for carry-on luggage will no longer be imposed at 22 airports in the UK from today.
Other airports, including the UK's second busiest, Gatwick, are
retaining the rule, causing fears of confusion amidst passengers.
Airports must prove that they have installed improved security
scanners for the restriction, enforced following a terror alert in
August 2006, to be lifted. The Department of Transport insists that all
airports must be able to handle extra baggage without compromising
their security checks.
Bristol, Luton, Leeds/Bradford and Liverpool John Lennon are among the airports yet to satisfy security standards.
To complicate matters further, easyJet, which operates from 14
UK airports, including seven which have removed the rule, has decided
to maintain the one-bag allowance to keep a consistent message for
passengers.
British Airways will be permitting two pieces of hand-luggage
per passenger, whilst Virgin Atlantic will allow one piece plus a
laptop or handbag in economy and premium economy and two pieces in
first class.
Limits on the volumes of liquids and size of cabin baggage
still apply. The government is reminding passengers that it is their
responsibility to check hand-luggage policy with the airline that they
are using.
